Abstract
The main aim of this study was to determine some factors that can explain interpersonal differences in magnitude of in-group bias, based on Social Identity Theory and interpersonal individualism and collectivism. The first goal was to examine the size of individualism and collectivism within our sample (psychology students on Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb, N=139). The second goal was to examine relations between individualistic and collectivistic orientation and personal and collective self-esteem. The third goal was to determine relations between in-group bias and individualism, collectivism, personal and collective self-esteem. Instruments that were administrated included Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale (RSES, 1965), Luthanen and Crocker's Collective Self-esteem Scale (CSES, 1992.) and Horizontal and Vertical Individualism and Collectivism Scale (HVIC, Singelis 1995.). The measurment of in-group bias was operationalized as the score on Tajfel matrices in reward allocation task for both minimal and real group context. Consistent with previous findings, mean scores for our participants were moderate on both individualism and collectivism, with just slightly more prononced collectivism. Personal self-esteem moderatly correlated with horizontal individualism and collective self-esteem moderatly correlated with collectivism. Factors that are in some circumstances related to greater in-group bias are: real group (as opposed to minimal group), low personal self-esteem, low collectivism and low horizontal individualism.
