Abstract
The aim of this paper is to demonstrate in which way memory effects the plot or characters described in The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. This paper consists of two major parts. The first part of the paper is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter the focus is placed on the characters who represent this motif, namely the Elves, the Ents and Tom Bombadil. The second chapter deals with memory in Gondor and the third analyzes the motivation for characters telling tales and singing songs. Fourth chapter deals with the translation of several songs from English into Croatian language. In addition to the description of the motifs, their function for the plot is given as well. The second part gives two possible methodological approaches for 4th grade high school students.
