Abstract

ABSTRACT Feminist art stands as a complex type of artistic activism with problematic focuses embedded in the perspectives of various subjects; a type of activism that is always in close contact with both its theoretical principles and political and ideological background of a particular community.Croatian feminist art, from its very beginnings, was developed within its specific sociocultural situation with a set of questions relevant from a feminist point of view and it has been presenting an interesting case in the wider social and artistic context. The work of Sanja Iveković, beginning in the 1970s, stands out as a pioneering model ofcomprehensive artistic and feminist activism in the Croatian context and it also regularly corresponds with the current (or previous) socio-political situations (in Croatia and beyond). Precisely for this reason the work of Iveković seems as an inevitable reference point to almost any form of artistic activism from the ‘90s onwards. Examples of this type of methodological and conceptual inheritance can be found in some works by artists Andreja Kulunčić and Sandra Sterle.
