Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to investigate artworks of Josip Vaništa in his gorgonesque period (1959-1966) through the lens of sociosemiological theory . Given that Vaništa’s work developed after World War II in former Yugoslavia, the discussion begins with the historical and ideological context of his work. The later is presented as somewhat bipolar, divided between pro-Western ideology of civil and artistic freedom, and political imperative to control every aspect not just of the public life, but also the private life of citizens. In continuation, the short history of „Gorgona” group, key aspects of its artistic activity and Josip Vaništa’s crucial role within the group are presented.
