Abstract

There is an opinion in parts of public that people working in particular professions are more inclined to family violence. Results of research work done with police and military officers are, as of yet, inconclusive. One of the goals of this paper was to see if correctional officers, assuming similarity of that profession with the above mentioned one, are more inclined to violence in intimate partner relationships than comparable group of civilians. Research has been done at the correctional facility and one factory site, it was done in a group, voluntarily and anonimously. All of the participants were male with mid-level education and average economic wealth that were in a relationships or had just been in a relationship for at least 6 months. Revised conflict tactics scales (CTS2, Straus et al., 1996) was used, which is used to determine ways of resolving conflicts with a partner. This scale is composed of 5 subscales which correspond to different ways of resolving conflicts (negotiation, psychological aggression, sexual coercion, physical assault, injury), and contains items referring to the subjects and their partners. Results have shown that there is no difference. Another aspect of the paper was to determine differences of opinion on relationship violence. On the Scale of attitudes toward causes of relationship violence (Ajduković, D., Ajduković, M. i Jelić, M., 2005), which divides causes of violence in five groups (social circumstances, female behaviour, male behaviour, previous traumatic experience of a male, traditional stance of society towards violence) no differences were found between two groups of participants.
