Abstract
Self-compassion is a construct that might represent just as good a determinant of adaptive behavior as self-esteem, but with different consequences. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship of self-compassion, as a new construct, with the already familiar constructs like self-esteem, narcissism and life satisfaction. A total of 267 students of the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb, mostly psychology students, responded to questionnaires that examined self-compassion (Neff, 2003), self-esteem (Rosenberg, 1965; according to Lacković-Grgin, 1994), narcissism (Ames, Rose i Anderson, 2006) and life satisfaction (Diener, 1985; according to Pavot i Diener, 1993). We have got a positive correlation between self-compassion and self-esteem, and also positive correlation of both constructs with life satisfaction. What proved to be different, is a positive correlation between self-esteem and narcissism, while self-compassion with narcissism is not significantly correlated. Using regression analyzes we defined the contribution of self-esteem and self-compassion to life satisfaction. It has been shown that self-esteem individually explains life satisfaction, as well as self-compassion, who has also separate contribution in explaining the variance of mentioned criteria, more specifically life satisfaction. In this research we have examined more closely the construct of self-compassion in our culture and established its relationship with some of already familiar constructs.
