Abstract
Relationship breakup is stressful life event faced by many young people. Given that previous studies have not often examined cognitive determinants of coping with relationship breakup, the goal of this study was to examine whether the time perspectives and close relationship beliefs determine posttraumatic growth and breakup distress. The study was conducted on a sample of 445 participants aged 18 to 30 years (197 men and 248 women). Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory, The Relationship Beliefs Scale, Breakup Distress Scale and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory were applied in the study. After controlling gender, initiator of the breakup, relationship duration and time elapsed from the breakup, Past-negative and Present-hedonistic perspectives are significant additional predictors of breakup distress. After controlling gender, initiator of the breakup, relationship duration and time elapsed from the breakup, Time Perspective and Relationship Beliefs both have significant additional contribution to explaining personal growth after the breakup. Present-hedonistic perspective and higher valuation of Intimacy and External factors are significant predictors of greater personal growth after the breakup.
