Abstract
The history of Đurđevec and Virje and their surroundings is a story about places
which have taken on the features of frontier settlements during the 17th and 18th century and
renewed themselves at the same time in a demographic and economic way after a turbulent
period of confrontations at the Habsburg-Ottoman imperial frontier. These settlements have
been formed in the contact zone of the hillsides of Međurečka gora/Bilogora, the sand
deposits (Đurđevečki peski) and the valley near the Drava. This thesis is a contribution to the
comprehension of their reciprocal influences from the perspective of environmental history.
We usually talk about three levels of environmental history whereat the first one is the
understanding of the nature itself, the second is occupied with socioeconomic aspects, and the
third concerns itself with the intellectual perception of the environment, which shows itself in
the toponymy, collective memory and art. This is why the cartographic projections, church
registers, written historical sources, material remains, oral tradition and linguistic researches
are used as relevant sources in researching the history of environment.
Đurđevec and Virje are settlements that have influenced the organisation of the area
between the Drava river and the hillsides of Međurečka gora/Bilogora. This is why one part of
the thesis refers to the research of interrelations between three mentioned geographic regions
that define the environment in this area. The second part concerns itself with the
reconstruction of demographic movements in settlements in this part of Podravina. At the end
it is given the answer to the question about factors that have influenced the expansion of the
population from Đurđevec and Virje to the area near the Drava in the 18th century. It is
ascertained that the demographic pressure manifested as a need for arable land and other
resources. The solutions have been found in the forming of countrysides (konaki) and the
precondition for that was the anthropization of nature, which manifested in the form of
successful regulation of the Drava and its basin and in the relation of the society to the forest
resources. The frontier authorities have also influenced the inner colonisation of the area near
the Drava. The conclusions are based on the verifiable information shown in charts and some
of the results are presented with reconstructed cartographic projections.
