Abstract

The analysis of figurative terms and constructions in English and Croatian corpora of aviation related texts consists of two parts: the development and application of a metaphor detection method and a contrastive analysis of figurative constructions at linguistic and conceptual levels done within the theoretical framework of contemporary theories of conceptual metaphor and metonymy, frame semantics and frame-based terminology. The aim of the research is to conduct a corpus based contrastive analysis of English and Croatian figurative terms and constructions extracted out of two small specialized corpora of texts in the domain of air traffic management, and to define conceptual metaphors and metonymies to which the figurative constructions refer. Contemporary cognitive linguistic approaches to conceptual metaphor and metonymy provide a general theoretical framework for the analysis of English and Croatian figurative constructions, along with cognitive-based terminological approaches such as the Socio-cognitive theory of terminology (Temmerman 2000) and Frame-based terminology (Faber 2012). The linguistic analysis of the extracted metaphors and metonymies is conducted by applying the basic principles of Cognitive Grammar and constructionists’ approaches. A list of key terms of the domain of air traffic management is first automatically compiled using Sketch Engine tools, and then verified against a glossary of aviation English terms and collocations (Bratanić, Ostroški Anić and Radišić 2010). The results of the research contribute to the development of terminological research, to the improvement of applied terminographic methods, and to a better understanding of the relationship between general and specialized knowledge structures, and the cognitive mechanisms that structure them. The results of the research contribute to the development of terminological research, to the improvement of applied terminographic methods, and to a better understanding of the relationship between general and specialized knowledge structures, and the cognitive mechanisms that structure them. The methods applied can be used as a model of corpus based contrastive analysis of figurative language in any specialized domain of knowledge, as well as in the research of figurative elements in general language.
