Abstract

In July 2014 we conducted a first comprehensive research on users of online dating services in Croatia, based on a convenience sample of 594 respodents (213 users and 381 non-user). We wanted to examine motivation for using online dating services, as well as users' psychosocial traits (their self-esteem, sociability, sexual compulsivity and dating anxiety) and their self-perception of stigma towards the usage of these services. We also made comparisons between users and non-users by their psychosociological traits and examined prejudices by non-users towards users. Results showed that users are somewhat less sociable, more sexually compulsive (in addition of having more sexual partners) and that they have somewhat lower self-esteem than non-users. Furthermore, users do not differ from non-users by the result on a dating anxiety scale and they visit online dating services mainly in search for a romantic relationship and out of curiosity. Most of them also met face-to-face with people they previously met online. Results also show that non-users are still somewhat reserved towards usage of online dating services, mostly for safety reasons and out of distrust towards truthfulness of information that users share on their profiles. Since we cannot generalize our results to a broader population of users of online dating services in Croatia, it is necessary to conduct further sociological and psychological research on this growing phenomenon.
