Abstract
Popular culture has become the foundation of modern culture and can be seen as a very influential tool for spreading social values to the public. It is therefore important to examine how modern day feminism is characterized by popular culture and how women's problems are displayed. Television is one of the most popular forms of mass media and offers many different contents such as shows, movies, series etc. The main study of this thesis is the television show Sex and the City, which used to be one of the most popular TV shows of the early 2000s. When it first aired on the american cable network HBO, it was declared very scandalous because of its thematic content. Some consider it feminist because it deals with women's issues, others criticize it for being too shallow to be called feminist. The topic of this thesis is the content of the television show Sex and the City and feminist discourse in popular culture is the subject matter. The main idea of this thesis is to show how images of women are shown and whether third wave feminist ideals are represented in the show. The purpose of this thesis is to study the show from a feminist perspective and to get the insight in the media representations of women in today's popular culture and media. The general goal of this thesis is to examine, through quantitative content analysis of the show and it's messages, how modern day feminism is reflected in the popular culture and whether the third wave subjects are represented in the show. Subjects examined are sexual minorities, sexual objectification, beauty ideals, traditional and nontraditional values and multiplicity of women's identities. The results revealed that the show does not promote sexual minorities, but is instead orientated on white, thirty-something year old, upper middle class, single women and their attitudes. Sexual minorities are also not represented enough so that the subject could be relevant enough for the third wave. The Bechdel test showed that the most frequent subject of women's conversations is men. As for the traditional values, they are more and more questioned and the characters are conflicted with tradition and modern way of life. Non-traditional women's behavior is glorified, but there are still some traditionalattitudes about how men and women ought to behave. On the other hand, sisterhood is shown as the bright spot of the whole show and as the constant in the variable and inconstant coexistence with the opposite sex.
