Abstract

The aims of this study were to compare the quality of siblings relationship according to their age and to examine factors associated with the dimensions of the quality of their relationship. The first aim was to determine whether there is a statistically significant difference in the dimensions of the warmth, conflict and rivalry between sisters in early and middle adulthood. The second aim of this study was to examine individual, family and environmental factors associated with the dimensions of quality of siblings relationship. The study included 107 participants, 54 were in young adulthood and 53 were in the middle adulhood. Data were collected using the Questionnaire on sociodemographic data about the siblings and by the Adult Sibling Relationship Questionnaire(ASRQ; Ćubela Adorić and Jurkin, 2006). Sisters in young adulthood had warmer relationship, but also more rivality with their brothers than sisters who were in middle adulthood. On dimension of conflict there were no statistical difference found. There was a higher level of warmth in siblings relationship if they saw each other more often, if there was a smaller age difference between them and if the health of their mother was better. Their relationship was more conflictual if the sisters were married and had more children. The rivalry between the siblings was higher if age of the sister was older, if the sister had more children and if health of their mother was worse. There was no corelation between the geographical distance of living between the siblings and the dimensions of quality of their relationship.
