Abstract

Manipulation tactics are ways in which people deliberately, though not necessarily consciously, try to influence the behavior of others. In the field of psychology, studies have explored which manipulation tactics exist, to which factors they are related, and what determines their use. In this study, we examined the relationship of manipulation tactics with personality traits, their stability over time, and the posibility to predict future behavior based on personality traits and previously used tactics. The research was conducted in two measurement points in a span of 6 months. In the first point we collected data on the personality traits and manipulation tactics used by first-year students in friendship. In the next measurment point, we collected only data about the use of manipulation tactics. Analysis of the data confirmed existance of relationship between personality traits and manipulation tactics - indirect tactics were positively associated with neuroticism and negatively with agreeableness and conscientiousness. Direct tactics are positively correlated with extraversion. Results also show the rank and structural stability. Hypothesis of absolute stability was partially confirmed because the more lenient criterion lead to a significant reduction of the level of average use of direct tactics. This can be explained by typical methodological difficulties of longitudinal studies, but also by actual changes due to biosocial transition or current changes that are shown as a consequence of specific point of measurement. In the end, we can predict future behavior based on information about previous use of manipulation tactics, while personality traits appear to be a weak predictor of future use of manipulation tactics.
