Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the contextual determinants of sexual satisfaction and the role of sexual satisfaction in marital satisfaction. The study involved 302 couples from Croatia. Measuring instruments used in this study were Sexual satisfaction scale (Huston, Kamenov & Huić, 2010), Inventory of affection and negativity in marriage (Huston, Kamenov & Huić, 2010), Global measure of marital satisfaction and demographic questionnaire. The results show that there are differences in sexual satisfaction due to some contextual variables: age, length of marriage, religiosity, place of residence, whether they have children, whether the children live with them, emotional climate of marriage. There are lower levels of sexual satisfaction by those who are older, married longer, less religious, living in a medium-sized city, with children, living with children and who have more negative emotional climate of marriage. It has been found that men have higher levels of marital satisfaction than women, while there was no difference in sexual satisfaction and emotional climate of marriage between men and women. Significant predictors of marital satisfaction for men are religiosity, overlapping work schedules, emotional climate of marriage and sexual satisfaction while for women are religiosity, marital climate and sexual pleasure. Conducted hierarchical regression analysis explained 44.7% of the variance in marital satisfaction for men and 53.9% of the variance in marital satisfaction for women.
