Abstract
Depression begins to increase intensively in period of adolescence. In order to exploreprevention and treatment of depression, in this study we tried to clarify the relationship between the amount of practicing extracurricular activities, especially physical activities, satisfaction with body appearance and depression in female and male adolescents. The participants were 2nd and 3rd grade high school students (N=240; 111 male and 129 female participants). The participants filled in Extracurricular Activities Questionnaire, and self-rated body satisfaction and depression in Body Satisfaction Scale and Depression Scale. As expected, female adolescents are significantly higher in depression compared to male adolsecents. In amount of participation in leisure time (physical and non-physical) activities, and body satisfaction no gender differences were determined. We examined the relationship between variables for females and males. There was a significant negative correlation between engagement in physical activity and depression among male adolescents. Among female adolescents no significant associations were determined.
