Abstract

Concept of perfectionism is still relatively new and unexplored area, especially in the younger population, so the main goal of this study was to examine the relationship between perfectionism and the behavioral problems of adolescents. The study included 274 third grade students from two high schools in Zagreb. Perfectionism was assessed by the perfectionism scale that was constructed by students of psychology as part of the subject Personality assessment (Procjenjivanje ličnosti) in 2013, and the behaviroal problems of adolescents were assessed by the Youth Self-Report (Achenbach i Rescorla, 2001, see Macuka, 2008). In this correlational research results show that there is a postive correlation between perfectionism and behavioral problems of adolescents. Negative perfectionism is positively correlated with overall behavioral problems of adolescents. Total perfectionism and negative perfectionism are positively associated with internalized problems. Analysis of variance showed a significant statistical difference between the adaptive perfectionists and those who are not perfectionists, as well as non-adaptive perfectionists in the total amount of behavioral problems. Adaptive perfectionists and non-perfectionists have less behavioral problems than non-adaptive perfectionists. There were significant differences between the adaptive perfectionists and non-perfectionists, as well as non-adaptive perfectionists in the amount of internalized problems. The adaptive perfectionists and non-perfectionists have less internalized problems than non-adaptive perfectionists.
