Abstract
The goal of this study was to examine the knowledge of Croatian students about the Homeland War, compare differences between males and females and examine in which way are this knowledge, national identity, contacts with Serbs and the exposure to war related to bias towards the Serbs. 328 students of Croatian nationality from eight different colleges in Zagreb and Zaprešić took part in this study. A Homeland War knowledge test was constructed for the purpose of this study, with 23 questions. Apart from this new instrument, the National Identity Scale, the Scale of contacts with Serbs, the War exposure scale and the Intergroup bias scale were used, and the necessary sociodemographic data were collected. Average results of knowledge about the Homeland War were at about half of the range of the questionnaire scores. Male students had a slightly higher level of knowledge than their female colleagues. National identity, contacts with Serbs and war exposure were important predictors of the negative bias toward Serbs. Participants with stronger national identity, less contacts with Serbs and more war exposure showed a more negative bias towards the members of the Serbian ethnic group, while knowledge about the Homeland War was not predictive for this relationship.
