Abstract

Social status is defined as one's achieved degree of influence during resource sharing, conflict resolution and group decision-making (Berger et al., 1980). Henrich and Gil-White (2001), proposed two separate paths towards achieving high status – dominance and prestige. Tracy and Robins (2007) established the existence of two distinct facets of pride - authentic and hubristic pride. Tracy et al. (2010) suggested that pride functions as part of a status-seeking mechanism, and an increasing number of studies are currently focusing on the assumption that the two facets of pride serve as an affective basis for achieving dominance or prestige. The aim of the current study was to determine the combination of predictors that is most effective in explaining the two types of social status. Using hierarchical regression analysis, we analysed the extent to which types of pride, Big Five personality traits and Dark triad personality characteristics explain achieved social status. We expected that hubristic pride would achieve incremental validity in predicting dominance, and that authentic pride would achieve a significant contribution in explaining prestige. 150 psychology students completed the Hubristic and Authentic Pride-Proneness Scales as well as the Dominance and Prestige scales, and the IPIP50 questionnaire and Dark Triad questionnaire D3-27 were used to measure personality traits. The results indicate the existence of two types of social status, which are related to different behavioural styles and associated with different personality patterns and traits. Prestige is mostly influenced by authentic pride, extraversion and intellect, while dominance is largely explained by psychopathy and narcissi (the relationship is mediated by hubristic pride) and agreeableness.
