Abstract
The starting point of the analysis is the novel The Living and the Dead (Živi i mrtvi) written by Josip Mlakic. The sreenplay written by the same author for the film of the same title serves as the link between the written word and its screen adaptation. It is exactly through the examination of the screenplay that a clear image of the diegetic side of scenes is obtained, even before analyzing the film itself. The work firstly introduces theoretical facts related to film, language and literature, after which follows the analysis of the works mentioned above. The style of the novel and the film is described as literary artistic style, and the characters` voices are in accordance with the same. Through the usage of various dialects and jargon, th author seeks to achieve a natural conversational style. The dialect becomes the carrier of characters, their cultural heritage, social status and psychogical state
