Abstract
Speech is integral to human life and the basic means of communication. However, speech acquisition may be difficult due to inherent deviations. Down syndrome is one of the most common genetic disorders in the population which brings along problems with speech and language. This paper indicates interdependence of speech and movement through the rehabilitation of a child with Down syndrome. Given that movement stimulates speech and language development of a child, it is also very important in the rehabilitation of a child with Down syndrome. The paper gives an extensive description of the syndrome and comparison of both speech, language and motor development of a typically developing child and speech, language and motor development of a child with Down syndrome. Speech and language development of a five year old girl with Down syndrome is analysed. She attends the Center for Training and Education “Slava Raškaj”. Further rehabilitation is suggested in accordance with the principles of the Verbotonal method.
