Abstract
Fernando Pessoa, a Portuguese modernistic writer, impresses with the diversity of his work in which he integrated the inheritance of modernity, but also adopted many of the styles of the former eras. In his works he also incorporated the phenomenon of heteronymy which can be described as the disintegration of the poet’s personality on new authors with their own separate biographies, poetics and opera. One of these heteronyms is Ricardo Reis, a neoclassicist who, influenced by Roman poets, writes odes in an austere form, with Latinized syntax, filled with motives of mythological provenance. Therefore, special effort is required while translating his poetry, as well as a careful selection of only those aspects of the poem which can be preserved in the translation.
