Abstract
In this dosctoral thesis, a relation between language and sexuality is being investigated in selected plays by Henrik Ibsen, Luigi Pirandello, and Milan Begović, in terms of psychoanalytic theory. By reconsidering literary representations of femininity and masculinity in plays by Henrik Ibsen, as well as in plays by authors such as Luigi Pirandello and Milan Begović – both of whom inherit Ibsen's concerns and interest in anamorphic games of knowledge and non-knowledge, surface and depth, foreground and background – this dissertation intends to elaborate on the hypothesis that in literature, sexual difference is an immanent poetics issue.
