Abstract
The aim of the work is to gain the ethnological and cultural-anthropological insight into the vow as a form of non-institutional personal piety, circumstances and concepts that shape it, as well as religious attitudes and experiences that are expressed in and through it. The basic approach used in the work is observing the vow as religious i.e. cultural practice belonging to religion. The research has confirmed that the vow as a religious practice is culturally defined by the patterns related to the sacred and to the cultural context within which it is used, therefore the vow changed through history depending on different influences. It also showed that individuals shape the vow as a religious practice by inscribing in it those meanings that they use in shaping their own self.
