Abstract

Within the last decade, the business of renting private accommodation to tourist has developed on a local level in many neighborhoods and streets in the city of Split. The old Split Radunica street, located just east of the city center, was amongst the first where the local population, gradually since 2004, worked on the development of their neighborhood as a tourist destination. Many families living in Radunica decided to readjust the many spaces and flats into apartments for tourists. Afterward, a new social product was created through social construction, selforganization, cooperation and distribution of roles and functions. Within this paper, I explore the circumstances that enabled and conditioned the development of Radunica as a tourist destination, which then changed the everyday life, social relations and interactions amongst the local residents. Through the prism of this newly developed tourist business and through the culturalanthropological understanding of the culture which reflects the overall lifestyle of the local community, the construct of the local identity in Radunica is analyzed with a special focus on the relationships between the locals and the tourists, narratives about Radunica and the changes in the infrastructure of the street.
