Abstract

This paper examines the autobiographical prose of Vesna Parun. The texts chosen for the analysis are Autobiografija u deset rečenica, Vesna Parun o Vesni Parun and Tko je Pave Versa, as well as an autobiographical novel Noć za pakost, from which three memoiressayistic prose texts will be analyzed Poljubac života, Do zalaska sunca hodajući za kamilicom and Pod muškim kišobranom, and this analysis will help considerably in determining the differences between memoir and autobiographical texts. Special attention will be paid to the position of a narrator in the text, in other words the specific quality of narrative strategies which the author uses when she speaks about herself will be considered - from the main narrative strategies of first-person narrative, through retrospectives and credibility, to the role of the public in the construction of personal identities. It will show the development of autobiography from the beginning until today. This paper will provide a brief overview of literary-scholarship, literary-historical studies and literary theory of autobiography on Croatian territory, as well as the classification of types and models of contemporary Croatian autobiographical prose. The biographical part of the paper will work out in detail the life and work of Vesna Parun. The main objective of this paper is to identify, on a chosen body of Vesna Parun’s texts, the characteristics of autobiographical discourse and to point at the possibility of different ways in which one can write about her/his own life by connecting real and fictional, collective and personal, documentary and intimist.
