Abstract

This paper studies dialectological characteristics of the idiom of Split whose chakavian features are disappearing and also considers recommendations from didactical theories, curriculum theories and methodic of teaching Croatian language regarding a possibility to organise classes about the idiom of Split to stimulate students’ interest for dialectology. Theoretical hypothesis are being verified by conducting a research of teaching practice in a primary school in Split using qualitative methodology and sociolinguistic methods. The research has confirmed that some chakavian features are disappearing from the speech of primary school students in Split and that there are some differences among students’ idiolects. Teaching about the idiom of Split could be successful within various kinds of Croatian language teaching programmes by using modern methodological approaches to bring the content closer to students.
