Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the presence of the Heracles' myth throughout the history of Greek literature in addition to presenting the data regarding cities called Heraclea gathered from ancient literary sources and scientific works. The myth of Heracles, presented through interpretations and theories regarding his origins and role both as a hero and a god of the Greek cult, is compared to the testimonies about his presence in the cities of Heraclea. Here an attempt has been made to explain the relationship between the hero and the cities regarding the homonymy. As the cities mentioned are mostly colonies, the focus was on Heracles' role as a cultural hero important in the proces of Hellenization in the Mediterranean and beyond.
