Abstract
When it comes to a playwright, such as Marin Držić, four aspects of the process of his canonization are to be differentiated: publishing of his texts; reflections upon his work from the perspective of literary criticism; building of his status through educational system and, finally, by means of stage productions. Two of these four aspects are in the focus of the present work: evaluation produced by the academic discourse and the one stemming from the theatre practice. More precisely, we are interested in their interrelations: to what extent stage productions of Držić's plays follow (contemporary) literary criticism, thus supporting the canonization process taking place within the academic discourse, to what extent they merely respond to the fact of the canonized status of the literary text, refusing the quest for the content of such a status and its literary interpretive ground, and to what extent they offer their own interpretive solutions with the canonizing potential without taking into account academic discourse. Here are, chronologically presented, the results of our research.
