Abstract

This thesis deals with etymological and lexicological analysis of Romance loanwords in the fishery and agricultural terminology of two Chakavian speeches – speech of Sali on the island Dugi otok and speech of Kukljica on the island Ugljan. The analysis covers the corpus collected from the existing dictionaries of the mentioned local speeches as well as from other available written sources. Comparison of the etymologically analyzed and stratified lexemes establishes their similarities and differences (on phonological, morphological and semantic level). Lexical description is followed by the presentation of features belonging to the speech of Sali and Kukljica, description of the socio-historical context of the villages Sali and Kukljica, a brief overview of the Zadar Dalmato-Romance dialect, also known as Iadertin, as well as by review of some important Romance-related issues concerning stratification of Romance loanwords in Croatian dialects (Venetian idiom, pan-Romance lexicon, Greek loanwords, adaptation of Venetian loanwords). Furthermore, the thesis includes review of some phonological and morphological tendencies noticed in the medieval inventories of Zadar.
