Abstract

The Ottoman arrival on the territory of the medieval Bosnian Kingdom signifies the beginning of a completely new aesthetic cycle in the history of art in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A special form of this new expression is Islamic calligraphy to which the Ottomans gave a significant contribution. Modest writings and published material suggest that Bosnian calligraphers began their activities from very early on, from the second half of the 15th century, but the real impetus of calligraphy can be noticed in the late 16th century. The purpose of this study is to present the quality of Islamic calligraphy in mushafs during the Ottoman period in Bosnia-Herzegovina in the 17th and 18th century. The Thesis is completely based on the manuscripts from the Gazi Husrev-bey’s Library in Sarajevo. The manuscripts were studied on the basis of aesthetic analysis with the help of Arabic palaeographic methodology. At the end is the Catalogue of manuscripts of the Mushafs, followed by the Glossary. The Thesis is accompanied by a portfolio of photos to illustrate the postulates.
