Abstract

Since the creation of the first magazine, not much has changed in the world of this publication, until the creation of the computer, digitization and digital publishing. This article will give a definition of digital magazines, try to familiarize the reader with the problematic categorization of magazines in general, and describe the history of digital magazines, from the first digitization to the modern age of open access, specialized computer applications and web magazines. Special care will be taken to detail the historical development of digital magazines and digitization in Croatia. Some of the more important digital magazines active in Croatia will be presented, with a focus on scientific journals published on the Internet portal/digital repository Hrčak (Hamster), a joint project of University Computing Centre and the National and University Library in Zagreb.We will sort out nine prestigious social science digital journals and compare them.
