Abstract
The increase of the number of tourists coming to Zagreb is an opportunity to represent Croatian, as well as Zagreb's, culture to the world. This tourists' arrivals demand certain adjustments, and one the most important ones is the translation of information. Text is the most common medium of translation and thus in focus in this paper. Two surveys were conducted. The first survey gives an overview of the amount and scope of museum exhibition texts and their translations in Zagreb's museums in 2015. The case study is an examination of museum exhibition texts in the Zagreb City Museum. Data on the attitudes of foreign tourists on their satisfaction with museum exhibition texts in the Zagreb City Museum were obtained by a questionnaire done in June and July of 2015. The results of the surveys show that there are translations of museum exhibition texts, and that the translations are mostly in English. Since English is not a mother tongue for many tourists, the language requires adjustments. Results show that the most important characteristic of the texts is their intelligibility and further results showed that museum do make intelligible texts since visitors showed a high rate of satisfaction. The museums should, in their future actions, focus on creating and translating object labels, since their translations are what the visitors wanted to see in the museum. It is important to conduct visitor research in museums and, based on the results, adapt the contents of the texts, interpretation techniques, and translations.
