Abstract
This dissertation presents two programs financed by National Endowment for Humanities which focus on the conservation of historical newspapers. Newspapers are an important part of every country’s cultural heritage and a relevant source of information about history. Digitisation helps preserve the original and makes newspapers more available. The term digitalization, its goals and the criteria for content selection are more closely explained. National Digital Newspaper Program began with its work in 2004 and is trying to digitalize newspapers that are considered important for American history. All states and territories of U.S. are participating in the program. This program builds on the legacy of a successful U.S. Newspaper Program whose goal was to put on microfilm all newspapers published in America from the 18th century until today.
