Abstract
The goal of this thesis is to describe the process of map digitisation, as well as its use in geographic information systems. After the description of map digitisation, connected to the author's own map digitisation experience, the paper talks about the preparation of digitised maps for use in geographic information systems through raster-to-vector conversion and georeferencing. In the following chapter geographic information systems are defined and their development is described. The chapter about spatial data focuses on the various features of spatial data, the process and reasons behind the quality control, and the issues that arise in working with GIS. The next pages focus around the user interface of GIS software and its many applications. The last several chapters present some of the more prominent GIS software packages and describe their usage and functions.
