Abstract
The center of this research examines the way in which the concept of ˝memory˝ can be
useful in articulating the connections between the cultural, social, and political; between the
representation of the past and of the social experience of that past. The research is based on
the hypothesis that both the official history and the collective memory are social constructs,
and that the political and ideological interests of elites are particularly present in dominant
narratives about the past. In order to obtain a truly comprehensive view of history, besides
considering just the official interpretations of the past, it is necessary to take into account
interpretations and the reception, on a micro-level, of ˝ordinary˝ citizens, i.e of the wider
social public.
