Abstract
The subject of this thesis is the role of women in Japanese cinema, whether that role has
changed from the beginnings of Japanese cinematography and if it has, how much it has
changed and in which ways. The thesis containts the theoretical part, which covers the
development of Japanese cinematography from its beginnings to present day, a brief overview
of methodology used, and finally, the research part, which contains the analysis of women and
their roles through several selected movies that have, each in their own way, left a mark on
each decade of Japanese cinematography.
