Abstract
The number of students who decide to learn Croatian as a foreign language is steadily increasing. Learning Croatian as a foreign language is affected by many factors, such as personality, intelligence, sense of language, tolerance, motivation, learning styles, the structure of first and second language, their mutual interaction, adopting strategies and age. Age as one of the factors has a large impact on how we acquire a foreign language because in the different age we learn differently. The age in which we learn language has a huge impact on the success in language acquisition. Numerous studies support the hypothesis of the existence of a critical period after which the ability to learn new languages decreases. Regardless of this thesis, it is safe to say that age has an impact on motivation and attitudes to learning the language, and the motivation and attitude are one of the main factors in the learning process. Age affects the other elements in the learning process such as choice of teaching materials and teaching strategies that are tailored according to the age in which students learn a foreign language.
