Abstract
Stylistics is a linguistic discipline that together with the text linguistics forms a part in a theory of communication. It is a discipline that studies language in written and oral communication, objective and subjective factors influencing the choice of language resources, analyzes the stylistic value of individual language units and evaluates the style of the text as a whole unit. Czech stylistics distinguishes six main language styles according to its principal function: the style of everyday communication, scientific style, administrative style, journalistic style, artistic and rhetorical style. This thesis deals about journalistic style as one of the six main functional styles and studies the impact of the objective factors on the choice of lexical itemsin newspaper articles from two time periods of the Czech history – the period of normalization, which is the period of re-establishment of the strict communist regime that lasts from 1969 until 1989, characterized by censorship of the press and emphasized persuasive and educational function of newspaper articles. The other time period studied in this thesis is the period after the fall of communist regime, the period of transition to the new millennium that due to political, economic and social changes also brings a number of innovations in the newspaper texts. In this thesis, I’m analyzing the vocabulary in 80 articles of the Czech daily press which was published in both periods, of the newspapers Rudé právo and Mladá fronta. The goal of this thesis is to show the impact of social and political changes in the country on the way of writing newspaper articles and on the change of journalistic style in general.
