Abstract
In an age when digital data is dominant and storage of a large capacity is affordable, digital data is worth preserving. This thesis provides insight into how the data can be preserved in the long-term and which threats are occurring on the physical level of records. Through the comparison of memory and storage, and storage organization and its hierarchy, it offers a solution to present the user as much as possible storage capacity in the cheapest technology, providing access at the speed of the fastest memory. The structure and operation of the hard drive is described. Various systems for connecting multiple hard drives in a redundant array of independent disks, known as RAID configurations, are described each of which offers certain advantages and disadvantages when it comes to performance and data protection. Last chapter provides an overview of various errors and types of corruption that can happen to the data on the level of inscription on the media. Several countermeasures are provided as well.
