Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of prediction of social anxiety
(fear of social interactions) based on predictor variables (perception of parental behaviour dimensions – support, restrictive control and permissiveness and perception of parental social self-efficiency). Possible gender differences in those predictor variables were also examined in consideration with gender of students and gender of parent chosen as a social development model in childhood. 516 students from the University of Zagreb, Croatia participated in the study. The following instruments were used: Parental Behaviour Questionnaire, The adjusted scale of Perceived Social Self-Efficacy and Social Interaction Anxiety Scale. The statistically significant difference was observed for the variable support – both female and male students have higher perception of mother's support. As to perception of parental social self-efficacy, female students have higher estimates of parental social self-efficacy than male students. In addition, both female and male students have higher estimates of father's social self-efficacy. Significant predictors for explaining the variance of social anxiety of female students are all three parental behaviour dimensions: support, restrictive control and permissiveness, while significant predictors for explaining social anxiety of male students are perception of parental social self-efficency and restrictive control.
