Abstract
By fulfilling the informative and the educative role, the media accomplish one of the basic social goals by increasing citizens' political awareness, as well as encouraging their participation in the elections. Elections reporting can be extremely challenging to the media, since its credibility, as well as the journalists' one, are being scrutinized in the process. Creating media content means seeking valuable pieces of information and establishing the balance between the readers' interests and the newspapers' ones, which is one of the key factors. News selection is based on a journalists' subjective estimation, which is strongly influenced by their personal values and the perception of professional standards. Since daily newspapers aim to give a broader context of the events, the aim of this thesis was to analyze the informative and educative role of the six Croatian daily newspapers in the time of the 2014 European Parliament elections.
