Abstract

Throughout history, the question of life and death has always been one of the fundamental questions of human existence. Philosophy, religion, medicine and law have different viewpoints on euthanasia, but nevertheless, they have tried to give guidelines on how to resolve this controversial question. The paper addresses euthanasia from bioethical point of view. The objective is to present the pros and cons of the euthanasia. The paper will not try to give a definitive answer to the question about the moral correctness of euthanasia. Instead, it will address the different perspectives within the interdisciplinary field of bioethics. Besides that, the paper will deal with the development of bioethics and bioethical committees abroad. Furthermore, different perspectives (philosophical, religious, medical and legal) will be discussed, as well as possible alternatives to euthanasia – palliative care and hospice.
