Abstract
Nursing is still largely under-represented in current debates about the health care system in Croatia. This text aims to raise consciousness about the importance of this topic: by analyzing the legal and ethical framework of nursing, the current form of vocational education and the working conditions of nurses, the author wants to draw up the general frame within which the nursing profession operates. As an addition to this approach, informants' narratives collected during fieldwork illustrate the practical implications of the general frame. The combination of theoretical and practical approaches should encourage nurses and patients to think critically about nursing and its future in transitional and neoliberal health care systems.
