Abstract
Sustainable development and national security are two concepts which by their complexity represent a permanent research interest to scientists of different disciplines, including sociologists. Their interrelationship in the last decade is a special area of research and therefore this paper is a contribution to those efforts. Key questions to which this paper tries to answer are what is the role of sustainable development in the concept of security analyzed from the perspective of critical security studies and what is the position of the two schools of critical security studies with respect to weak and strong sustainability. Since the main authors of the critical security studies highlight the applicability of its concepts to real cases in relation to the classical theory, we analyzed the example of the European Union. By reviewing European security strategy and Sustainable development strategy in the last decade, we examined the interrelationship between the main points and guidelines for these key documents. In this paper we have shown that the key challenges and threats to sustainable development and security are closely connected, and that it is justified to emphasize the growing importance of sustainable development for national security as such.
