Abstract

To our knowledge, this is the first Croatian research focused on collecting – a form of consumer behaviour common in the western society. With a small number of studies aimed at collectors and mostly using qualitative methodology, we put an emphasis on gaining more knowledge about collectors through quantitative methodology. Our main goal was to discover which dispositions predict the intentions of collecting consumer behaviour. We collected data on 228 Croatian collectors, who responded to an on-line survey which included personality questionnaires, scale of collecting behaviour intention and sociodemographic questions. Their results on the personality dimensions and facets were compared to the results of previous researches which used the same psychological questionnaires. In comparison with the general population, the collectors showed higher results on extraversion, agreeableness, intellect, and two consciousness facets, order and achievement striving. By using stepwise regression analysis we wanted to see how do sociodemographic traits and personality traits predict collecting intention. Results showed that we explained 2.6 % of the collecting intension variance, with (female) gender being the only significant predictor. In the paper we discuss these findings and the possible reasons for the lack of correlation between dispositional variables and criterion. We also give advice for the future research connected to this topic.
