Abstract
The aim of this research was to investigate the role of physical activity in mental health. In order to measure physical activity a short questionnaire was made, similar in its content to most used questionnaires dealing with measuring physical activity. The research was conducted by using on-line questionnaire. Out of the total number of participants N=668, 508 were female. To examine the mental health we used the CORE-OM questionnaire, while personality traits were measured using the BFI questionnaire. The findings show that there is a significant difference of results provided by the questionnaire CORE-OM in participants with different levels of physical activity. The most active participants achieve considerably lower results (that indicate lower degree of distress) than the least active participants (d=0.46). Besides, differences in personality traits have been found; the most active participants achieve higher results on the dimension of conscientiousness, and lower results on the dimension of neuroticism in comparison to the least active participants with the effect size d s =0.44 and d n =0.60. For the dimension of extraversion a difference between highly and moderately active participants has been found; highly active participants achieve higher results than the moderately active participants (d=0.39). However, regression analysis results suggest that physical activity is not predictive for mental health when effects of personality traits are controlled.
