Abstract
Language as an important component of human communication plays a crucial role in all of the aspects of the human life. Language development and acquisition are gradual and have their own course. The assumption is that there are critical periods in the language acquisition during which it is necessary to master certain language aspects. After these periods have passed, it is not possible to do so. This paper gives a short overview, which shows the course of language acquisition and mastery, and a short description of bilingualism and a bilingual person. The main topic of the paper are the critical periods in second language acquisition in bilingual children. Examples are given which support the hypothesis of critical periods in language acquisition. Examples in the German language are given, which show the acquisition and mastery of grammar in the first and second language and the effect that critical periods and age have on it. The sooner one starts with the acquisition of a language the more successful it will be.
