Abstract

The thesis examines the thematics of the state of trance induced by means of music mainly from the theoretical point. Special focus is given to the sociocultural factors which influence the individual in the process of shaping the trance experience. While the universality of trance is based on innate human psychophysiological disposition, the trance experience is in high degree determined by cultural representations, systems of ideas and meanings of different social groups. The ways in which cultural factors determinate the trance phenomena are observed based on Rouget's classification of trance induced by music. Each of the different types of trance (possession, shamanic trance, communial trance and emotional trance) is represented in the wider context of related systems of beliefs, as well as presented by concrete examples of social rituals which basic purpose is induction of the trance state. All aspects include a social dimension of different forms of collective actions that lead to the states of trance. Shamanic and communial trance are presented based on ethnographic records while when it comes to possession and emotional trance participant observation is applied in order to gain empirical insights into the thematics.
