Abstract

Mara Matočec operated in the 1920s and the 1930s, as member of „Seljačka sloga“ in Đurđevac and Korija. She was active in writing plays, leading amateur groups, organizing events, educational activities, readings and common concern for the health of children. She participated in cultural activities, trips and lectures throughout the country, particularly in Bosnia and elsewhere. With all of these practical activities, Mara wrote and published poems and articles in many journals and wrote down folk poems, proverbs and sayings. She stood out in activities related to women's issues. During the World War II, Mara stopped to act, wrote at her home and is no longer publicly operated. She operated at the time of institutionalization study of ethnology at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences in Zagreb and worked with ethnographers like Slava Kovač and Kata Jajnčerova. Her poems, articles, write down folk poems, proverbs and sayings confirm that she was unintentional ethnographer. Mara Matočec operated in the context of political events since 1915 to 1941. Her idea which advocates that all women have the right to vote, coinciding with the main idea of "first-wave of feminism" for women's suffrage. She thought that all women should get the right to vote, not just civil, educated, unmarried or women of elite. She has never called her own "feminist", but this is largely avoided. She was learning from Stjepan Radić about women's movements in Europe and America and has built up a clear position about the early feminist theory and practice.
