Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate whether the impression about the hypothetical person will be more influenced by the priming effects or by order of information which were presented about this person. Additionally, it was examined if the number of remembered primes had an impact on the impression of the target person. The research was conducted on the sample of 230 I. and II. year university students of social studies. Four groups of participants were exposed to different experimental situations. Independent variables were trait priming with positive or negative stimuli and the order of information, that is, whether the first information about the target person was positive or negative. Dependent variables were evaluations of the hypothetical person on the dimensions of hostility, nonhostility, positivity and negativity. The research results show that the type of priming did not effect the impression formation about the target person on any of the appraised dimension. There is also no significant difference between the groups of respondents regarding the number of words they have remembered. However, the results of this research have confirmed the presence of the primacy effect on the hostility dimension. Target person was evaluated more negatively after the negative information were presented first, while the impression was more positive if the person was first introduced as friendly. Order of information did not influence evaluation of the target person on other dimensions.
